A home fit for the future

Don’t be fooled by appearances, for behind the unassuming exterior of this character home on 261 Stanley St, North Adelaide lies a spacious and contemporary family home fit for the future. Vendors Vin and Deb bought the home in 1999, with Vin saying, internally, the home bears little resemblance to how it did 23 years ago.

“It was a bit run down and it was actually disposed of some offices upstairs and bedrooms downstairs, and I saw the potential of putting it back to a family home, which is what we did,” he says.

“I could really see it’s potential, that’s really what attracted me to it.

“Over the 20 years we did smaller bits to it and then we did a big major reno in 2014. That took a huge amount of work and was a nine-month project, and we actually lived in the home while the tradespeople did their thing. We set up a makeshift kitchen on the lower level and went about our days down there while they worked on the upper level.

“My brother’s an architect and he did the design, and although the process was slow, it came together really beautifully and we’re really pleased with how it turned out.”

As much as the home offered potential, Vin says it was the view that really drew him to the property and encouraged him to transform it into something more befitting its enviable location.

“The view is fantastic and we wanted to make that better as it really only had a small veranda, so we managed to maximise the space for that and made the veranda upstairs much, much bigger and turned that into a real entertainer’s deck,” he says. “Plus we opened the back of the house up so that you get views of the city from the living areas inside the house.

“We had all these ideas about what we wanted to do and we thought ‘well, if we’re going to do this, then we should also do this’, and so on and so forth and it just all unfolded and didn’t feel like there were random additions or upgrades here and there, because we thought it through, and it all worked together really well.

“We’d lived in the home for so long before we did it, so we knew exactly what we wanted where, what we wanted to change, and more importantly, what we loved about the home that we wanted to keep and preserve.

“We took all of this to my brother and he really brought it to life, and we’re so proud of what he’s achieved here.

“The house is like a TARDIS really – it’s really understated from the street, but when you go inside it’s huge, and lovely. “We’ve had three children here – our youngest was born just after we moved into the house, and it was really great for kids because there’s a huge backyard, plenty of places to play and we built a chook shed and put in a veggie garden and fruit trees and so on, and it was just brilliant.”

The home has five bedrooms, numerous indoor and outdoor living areas, original character features, quality fixtures and fittings throughout and sits on an 825sqm allotment.

“We’ve had some fantastic Christmas parties here, and the best thing about it is you walk in off the street level and everything is there – the kitchen’s there, the deck, the lounge and living rooms,” Vin says. “So it’s a very easy house to have guests over in. When we finished we had an ‘end of renovation’ party here for 50, and there was still plenty of room to move.

“Everyone’s reaction is one of wonder. They walk into the lounge room and just can’t believe that view. There are very few places in North Adelaide and along Stanley street that offer expansive view.

“Plus, here you’re a bit away from the flight path of the aircraft, so it’s so much quieter here than other parts of North Adelaide. The location really is amazing. We walk and cycle everywhere – to the city, Adelaide Oval, the Festival Theatre, everywhere.”

With the couple’s children having flown the coop, Vin says it’s time for another family to move in and enjoy it.

“We don’t need this whole home for just the two of us, so it’s time to move on and downsize,” he says. “We don’t want to sell, but it’s time to do it. We’re really proud of what we’ve achieved here. It was a long-term project – we had an idea and it’s come to fruition and we’ve been really pleased with it, and now we hope someone else loves it like we have.”
