Wake to the sound of crashing waves in this stunning Tennyson family home, complete with a swimming pool and two levels of luxury living.
Tom Rooney and Nickola Weigall bought the home in December, 2019, attracted by the property’s flexible floorplan and sensational location just moments from the water of one of the state’s most stunning beachfronts.
“We have a bunch of kids and were looking for a six-bedroom home, and at the time they were hard to find,” Mr Rooney says. “We knew that some of them would soon be leaving the nest so we wanted a versatile house that we could use to run one or two offices, potentially, from the home and still have four bedrooms, or have an office and a guest room, and this home gave us the flexibility to do that. But really what attracted us to the home was what was out the front. There are just 14 homes in Adelaide that share a private walkway to the beach and this is one of them. I shifted from the Henley Beach area, which was a beautiful area, but the beach was getting busier and busier, and what attracted us to this place was that it wasn’t busy at all. It’s almost like living in the country here in the city, with the water on your doorstep. They can’t put a development out in front of us.
“I went to boarding school and my parents had a beach house at Tennyson, so I knew the area and I really enjoy having that connection with the last remaining remnants of metro Adelaide’s coastal dune system – the Tennyson Dunes. It really feels like we’re living in the country because there’s the same birdlife, there’s flora and fauna and there’s this amazing lizard here which is quite extraordinary. So we get that incredible view and the connection to an amazing natural environment. Plus my son and I are keen fishermen, and so to be able to walk down to the beach and catch a fish is brilliant.”
Set over two levels, the home features up to six bedrooms, or five and a study. The master suite takes pride of place on the upper level and features his-and-hers robes, and a spacious ensuite with a feature bath, a shower, a toilet, a bidet and a dual vanity unit. Three more bedrooms are set up here, all serviced by a family bathroom, and one of these bedrooms has a walk-in robe.
Downstairs you’ll find a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining and living area that opens to a waterfront deck. The kitchen has an island bench, a butler’s pantry and a wine room, while at the rear of the home you’ll find a large games room that opens to a veranda area near the property’s sparkling heated inground pool and spa. A laundry, bathroom, study, fifth bedroom and a triple garage complete this level.
“We have double-glazed windows which keeps it a fantastic temperature and helps keep it really quiet, but then if we want we can open them up and it creates this meditation app-style background ambience of rolling seas and birdsong,” Mr Rooney says.
“It’s quite a tall house so you actually get views of the city from out the back. It’s really a great house and we’ve left our little touches on it to improve it – like painting, updating the garden and tricking up the pool system to make that now app-controllable – but the previous owners really had done a fantastic job, and it’s top quality throughout. It really is a fantastic entertainer and a great home for cooking.
“It’s got a big butler’s pantry and there’s plenty of space there for storage, so we can have our Japanese section, our English section and our Indian section, and if we’re having a dinner party, we can simply pop everything in there, close it up and deal with it in the morning.
“It’s a big house and very accommodating, but it doesn’t feel cavernous, so it would be as ideal for a big family as it would be for a couple that wanted to enjoy that view and entertain. When the Covid lockdowns hit, and at times when we’ve been required to quarantine, it’s just been amazing, because we’ve each been able to get our own space.
“We often have parties at the same time our children will have their own party, and they’ll be out the back and we’ll be out the front and not disturb each other. It’s great.”
As much as they have loved living there, Mr Rooney says the time has come to move to be closer to ageing parents.
“We hope to move back at some stage, we just love Tennyson so much,” he says.
