Arguably one of Mount Gambier’s most coveted properties with a distinct old world charm, ‘Colhurst House’ is all set to welcome its new owners.
The majestic mansion at 3 Colhurst Place, a short walk away from the city centre, has been sold to a local buyer for $1.4 million, smashing Mount Gambier’s residential sales record.
According to CoreLogic property data, the top spot was previously held by 8 Turnbull Drive, Worrolong that sold for $1,250,000 on June 3, 2022.
The current median house price in Mount Gambier is $343,000, the data reported.
Represented by Anthony Hurl and Sharyn Yelland of Giordano & Partners, ‘Colhurst House’ was being run as a luxury bed and breakfast business.
“Such homes rarely come on the market and it was a unique opportunity for buyers,” Mr Hurl said.
New owner Michael Kosch, a well-known name in the hotel and tourism business in Mount Gambier, has grand plans for the iconic property.
“We have forayed in the luxury experience and celebration market with a similar property, The Delgattie Estate, and are keen to do the same with Colhurst House,” Mr Kosch said.
“We are very conscious of the character of this home and are looking to bring the gardens back to life. In fact, any changes we make would be to improve the guest experience and present it as a unique venue for weddings and celebrations,” he said.
Located on top of a hill on a picturesque 1926sqm allotment, the historic property enjoys panoramic views. While there are 19 rooms in all plus two extensive cellars, it is currently disposed as seven bedrooms and five bathrooms, including a resort style spa suite.
While it boasts modern comforts, the house has retained many of its historical features such as original fireplaces, high ceilings with ornate ceiling roses and deep cornices, an original staircase, original windows and original floorboards. The picture windows throughout the residence bathe the rooms in sunlight.
