Flinkier Motors family selling Toorak penthouse

Penthouse/9 Struan St, Toorak, is on the market for $6.5m-plus.

The Toorak penthouse of Melbourne’s motor industry Flinkier family is for sale for the first time in 20 years.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment at 9 Struan St has been home to Joe and Glenda Flinkier for the better part of the 2000s.

It was listed this month with a $6.5m-$7.1m asking price.

Mr Flinkier and his father founded well-known car dealership Flinkier Motors in 1948, which became the biggest importer of American cars in Australia at the time.

The business started in St Kilda before moving to Footscray and then back to Kings Way in the CBD, closing in about 2012.

Mr Flinkier’s son Jamie, who also worked for the dealership, said the idea for the family business started after his grandfather bought a new car.

“He was literally driving it home to show his wife and someone said how much do you want for the car, or so the story goes,” he said.

Jamie recalled growing up with “mustangs, cataracts, pontiac trans-ams” and other luxury vehicles on show.

“Bringing the cars to the people was the concept,” he said.

“But every customer we sold to became friends, over selling cars. That was always number one.”

The balcony is 180sq m.

City views.

He said it would be bittersweet to see his parents’ long-term home sold.

“Every single person who goes to this apartment, remembers going to this apartment,” he said.

“I had my 30th birthday party there and people still talk about it.

“It’s only seven stories high, so you’re not high in the clouds, but you’re above the tree line and you can’t be built out. It’s the best kept secret in Melbourne.”

Kay & Burton South Yarra partner Grant Samuel said the whole-floor property’s 360-degree views were “probably the best views of the city you will see in Melbourne”.

“We’ve had interest from local buyers and those overseas who have seen it as one of those properties that comes on once in a generation,” Mr Samuel said.

He added that while downsizers had shown the most interest so far, the apartment’s 420sq m internal footprint, plus 180sq m of terrace, could also cater for a family.

The home is being sold via an expressions of interest campaign ending June 20.
