Only property of its kind in Perth offers a slice of farm life in the middle of the city

A rare opportunity to live the farm life in the heart of East Fremantle is up for grabs, with what is arguably the only property of its kind in Perth.

The organic city farm residence at 10 Preston Point Road combines the best of both worlds, where the occupant can live off the grid but be just a stone’s throw from the city and the river.

This unique property offers a chance to live the best of both worlds – and sustainably, off the grid. Picture:

The two-bedroom, one-bathroom property occupies just 9% of the 1353sqm block and has been entirely future-proofed, while following the principles of permaculture.

Selling agent Rasmus Nielsen of the The Haus Exchange in Perth said the sellers had spent two years developing the property into a private organic farm after demolishing an original World War II-era cottage.

The home itself is sophisticated and high-end. Picture:

“They tried to reuse as much as they could from the old house – nothing is off the shelves, everything is custom made, everything is sourced locally where possible,” Mr Nielsen said.

“They would have spent probably $1 million on it, but it’s a bit hard to say because the garden was almost just a sand pit. There were some fruit trees there – that was it.

“So, in a relatively short amount of time, they have managed to make it something where you can actually live off the land.”

There are two beds and plenty of living space. Picture:

The owners are reluctantly selling but have future plans to create a similar property with animals, he said.

The passive solar designed home would most suit downsizers or empty nesters.

“It could be someone coming from the country into the city because you have got that space,” Mr Nielsen said.

“It is definitely someone who has a very fine criteria on how to live your life, as in they’re (the sellers) getting two meals a day out of the garden as it is already.

“The garden is constantly evolving; it’s moving with the seasons if that make sense.”

Whoever buys the property can live off the spoils of the land – literally. Picture:

Apricot, almond, lemon, and olive trees are well-established in the garden, while banana, avocado, and guava trees are part of a ‘growing’ list.

A vertical garden comprises peas, passionfruit, and spinach.

There are also compost stations, worm farms, an automatic grey water system, chicken runs, and beehives.

The property is arguably a one-of-a-kind. Picture:

Inside, there is burnished polished flooring, 3m high ceilings, and a study nook, and floorboards and joists from the old cottage have been repurposed as the staircase and door.

Other features include a custom fire pit and seating in the entertainment area, and a spacious roof terrace with a remote controlled louvre pergola.

Mr Nielsen is now accepting offers in the $2.8 million range.
